Atom Bank has offered a four-day working week to its staff, with employees either taking Monday of Friday off.
The digital bank said starting this month (November), staff can work a 34-hour week spread over four days for the same monthly pay compared to 37.5 hours previously.
Atom said it will encourage staff to work “core hours” of 9.30 am – 4.30 pm between Monday and Thursday.
Mark Mullen, chief executive of Atom Bank, said: “If you can do things as effectively over four days as over five, why be dogmatic?”
Speaking to the BBC, he added: "Before COVID, the conventional wisdom was you had to commute in, sit at a desk all day and repeat that process when you commuted home,"
"COVID showed us that it wasn't necessary…I think doing 9-5, Monday to Friday is a pretty old fashioned way of working."
Working from home has been a norm of office life following the impact of the coronavirus, but Atom is one of the largest UK employers to give the four-day option and said it followed a review that indicated it would have no effect on customer service or productivity.
Last week, stockbroker and corporate financier finnCap said it was offering its staff unlimited paid holidays to stop them burning out.
Staff will be required to take at least four weeks a year and two or three days a quarter.
