Beeple NFT sells for millions

The piece of digital art was auctioned at Christie's

The digital artist known as Beeple has sold a sculpture with an accompanying non-fungible token (NFT) for US$29mln in an auction hosted by Christie's.

‘Human One’, as the sculpture is called, was bought by a collector in Switzerland, who beat off bids from Hong-Kong and New York.

Standing at 7ft tall, the NFT is a 3-D video sculpture that depicts a striding human, dressed in silver and wearing an astronaut helmet, striding through an ever-changing landscape in a four-by-four box.

Beeple, born Mike Winkleman, claims the piece is supposed to portray “the first portrait of a human born in the metaverse”.

Like most NFTs, it is accessible through the Ethereum blockchain.

This is not first NFT sale of an artwork from Beeple by Christie's.

Back in March, the company held a sale of a collection of Beeple’s work titled ‘Everydays: The First 5000 days’ selling for an impressive US$69mln.

Sotheby's have also hosted its own NFT sale this year, with its week-long 'metaverse' auction bringing in over US$17mln in October.
