MGX Minerals says strategic review for space and nuclear metals is underway

A signature of these versatile metals is their ability to withstand extreme heat, as well as their high melting point

MGX Minerals Inc is conducting a strategic review of its REN niobium-tantalum-titanium-rubidium for in-demand nuclear and space metals.

A signature of these versatile metals is their ability to withstand extreme heat, as well as their high melting point.

Located in British Columbia, the REN property was drilled by MGX in 2018. Results of the 14-hole, 1249-meter drill program, included a drill intersection of 44 meters of 1700 parts per million (ppm) niobium with tantalum, titanium, and rubidium.

“Niobium has both a high thermal conductivity and high melting point and is used in nickel superalloys for aerospace applications such as turbine blades and rocket components, as well as, nuclear applications such as fuel and heat exchangers,” the company statement read.

Earlier this week, the materials and technology group updated its nuclear fuel activities, saying it has now identified the best candidate as a standardized fuel for the small modular nuclear reactor (SMR) market.

The news follows the company’s work analyzing an internal and external design study of fuel for use in land energy and long-range space flights.
