Volkswagen has unveiled a fully electric small car to be launched in coming years to bring affordable electric vehicles (EVs) to the mass market.
The ID LIFE, around the same size as VW's Polo, will start at a cost of roughly €20,000 (£17k), have a 250-mile range between charges and a video game console and large screen to watch films.
Frankfurt-based VW is seen as the leading “Tesla fighter” based on its aim to become the world's number-one EV maker by 2025.
In March, Volkswagen Group (XETRA:VOW), which owns the Audi, Seat, Skoda, Bentley, Lamborghini and Ducati motor brands among others, set out plans to significantly reduce the complexity and cost of electric batteries to make the electric car attractive and viable for as many people as possible, alongside building several battery gigafactories to enable this to happen.
By 2030, the group wants at least 70% of its car sales in Europe to be EVs and at least 50% in North America and China.
At the Munich motor show Ralf Brandstaetterthe, the VW brand CEO, said: "The ID LIFE is our vision of next-generation fully electric urban mobility. This means we are making electric mobility accessible to even more people."
The ID LIFE will be built at Spain's Seat factory and be based on the VW's dedicated EV platform.
