Nearly a third of Americans would back the use of Bitcoin as tender in the US, a YouGov poll has found.
A total of 27% of those polled by YouGov America support the idea of using Bitcoin as tender, as payment for goods and services, with 11% in ‘strong’ support. 34% responded in the ‘don’t know’ bracket, while 39% oppose the idea.
Sentiments skew, perhaps unsurprisingly, by age, with 44% of those respondents between the ages of 25 and 34 in favour and 36% of those between 18 and 24 also in support.
Some 54% of people over 55 were against using Bitcoin as tender, with 43% of the age bracket marked at ‘strongly opposed’.
The survey comes after El Salvador became the first country to adopt Bitcoin as tender on Tuesday.
Price volatility was one of the biggest critiques of the El Salvador move – a point emphasised as Bitcoin fell 10% on the very same day that it became tender.
Bitcoin hit an all-time high in April at around US$64,000, before halving in value over the following weeks and months as China clamped down on crypto-mining operations.
Since then the price has rallied, to trade at around US$46,000 today.
