Wetherspoons sorry as lorry crisis hits beer supplies

"We are experiencing some supply problems with both Carling and Coors"

Britain’s shortages crisis has now reached the pub sector with Wetherspoons' (LSE:JDW) apologising to customers after running out of two of its favourite beers – Carling and Coors.

After tweets from pubs with signs that Carling and Coors were not available Wetherspoons spokesman Eddie Gershon confirmed to reporters "We are experiencing some supply problems with both Carling and Coors, which means that some pubs do not have the products available.

"We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused.

"We know that the brewers are trying to resolve the issue."

The news sent Twitter buzzing as Wetherspoons founder and chairman Tim Martin is a prominent and vocal Brexit supporter.

The FTSE250 pub chain is the latest in a string of high profile names to warn about supplies.

Nando’s and Greggs have already said they were running into problems getting enough chicken.

KFC also cut back its menu while dairy group Arla reduced milk deliveries to supermarkets because of logistics problems.

A week ago, McDonald's Corp (NYSE:MCD) ran out of milkshakes and bottled drinks in all its 1,250 UK restaurants due to the supply chain issues while supermarkets have warned Christmas supplies might be under threat unless the situation eases.

Britain is said to be short of up to 90,000 HGV drivers due to a combination of Brexit and the Covid pandemic with staff shortages caused by the NHS app Pingdemic adding to the crisis.

The government has rejected calls from trade bodies to ease visa restrictions to help ease the driver shortage.

Shares in Wetherspoons rose 2.5% to 1,141p.
