Tesla car on autopilot crashes into a police car

The latest incident will heighten existing concerns about the safety of Tesla's Autopilot feature

A Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) Model 3 car on auto-drive has crashed into a parked car in Orlando, Florida. Not just any parked car … it was a police car.

The police car had pulled over to assist a Mercedes driver and one of the policemen narrowly avoided being hit by the Tesla. The driver of the Tesla and the driver of the Mercedes vehicle both suffered minor injuries.

An investigation into the crash is underway, but reports indicate the driver of the Tesla has admitted she was using the car’s auto-drive feature at the time of the collision.

The US’s National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration already has an investigation into Tesla’s Autopilot feature on the go after it determined that the system had been in use in a rash of Tesla collisions with emergency services vehicles.

In all, there have been 17 such crashes involving Tesla cars, one of which resulted in a fatality.
