Amazon UK offers £1,000 bonus to work in warehouses

Staff who join before 18 September are eligible for the bonus with posts offered at locations around the country

Amazon.com, Inc's UK arm is offering people a £1,000 bonus to work in its UK warehouses as its struggles to recruit staff to cope with the boom in online shopping.

The bonus is one of a number of incentives being offered by the giant reported the Standard, including immediate starts, flexible hours, £11.10 an hour for daytime shifts and double time for night working.

Staff who join before 18 September are eligible for the bonus with posts offered at locations around the country according to the report, with the skills required an ability to lift parcels of up to 50lbs in weight.

A lack of staff has been causing problems in numerous sectors, notably in logistics where the UK is said to be short of 90,000 HGV drivers according to trade bodies.

McDonald’s said today it has run out of milkshakes and bottled drinks in its UK restaurants because of the supply issues, while abattoirs are set to start using prison inmates to help cope with the shortages they are facing.

The Association of Independent Meat Suppliers told the BBC its members would work with the Release On Temporary Licence (ROTL) programme that allows prisoners to gain work experience to fill gaps

Brexit and Covid-19 have been blamed for the HGV shortage while the impact of ‘pingdemic’ warnings has also been a factor and something that was blamed for the UK economy starting to slow in the latest economic data.
