Orgenesis (NASDAQ:ORGS) Inc announced a new collaboration with biotech firm Savicell Diagnostics Ltd to accelerate the development and manufacturing of its cell and gene therapy platform.
The wide-ranging agreement sees Orgenesis (NASDAQ:ORGS) using Savicell’s immunometabolism platform to help advance its own platforms on a number of fronts.
Savicell’s ImmunoBiopsy platform non-invasively measures the metabolic state of the immune system and acts as a diagnostic link to early diseases, according to the company.

Under the agreement, Orgenesis will use ImmunoBiopsy to help develop and validate diagnostic kits and create new assays to strengthen the potency of cell and gene therapies.
The two companies will also develop companion diagnostics that could help enhance patient targeting of cell and gene therapies.
Germantown, Maryland-based Orgenesis said it plans to leverage the technology to measure the efficacy of different therapies as well as adaptations to improve the potency of certain therapies by selecting and propagating cells during the manufacturing process.
The initial QC kit will target cell therapy treatments for lung cancer, according to Orgenesis.
“Savicell’s ImmunoBiopsy platform has shown promise in early detection of cancer. We look forward to leveraging this technology in a number of key areas within our POCare platform,” Orgenesis CEO Vered Caplan said in a statement.
“Among these applications, we believe this platform could be a powerful add on to our therapies for ensuring the highest level of quality control during cell production, as well as measuring the efficacy of various approaches and enhancing manufacturing strategies in advance of clinical trials.”
The cell and gene therapy industry has faced major challenges maximizing the potency of autologous cell lines because of the difficulty in manufacturing in bulk with high levels of consistency, Caplan told investors, adding that the ImmunoBiopsy technology holds “enormous potential” to maximize the potency and ensuring consistency within the manufacturing process across the industry.
Orgenesis will also develop companion diagnostics to identify those patients most likely to respond to appropriate therapies.
