Westar Resources buoyed by potential gold indicators in maiden Winjangoo RC campaign

The 38-hole drilling campaign was built on a detailed targeting program, which saw survey, geochem and ground-based field results combined to pinpoint the highest priority reverse circulation targets.

Westar Resources Ltd (ASX:WSR)’s maiden reverse circulation (RC) campaign at the Winjangoo Gold Project at Mount Magnet in WA is now complete.

The precious metals explorer executed 38 drill holes for nearly 3,000 metres over several high-priority targets at the wholly-owned gold play.

Promisingly, the pioneer drill program hit multiple shear zones and encountered potential gold mineralisation indicators, with some assays submitted for priority analysis.

All samples are now with a lab in Perth, while the first assays are anticipated in the coming weeks.

“Results validate targeting model”

Westar Resources managing director Karl Jupp said: “We are excited to have completed the maiden RC drilling program at the Winjangoo Gold Project with many of the holes intersecting indicators of potential mineralisation, which validates our targeting model.

“Having personally logged many of the holes at Winjangoo, it was quite exhilarating to observe thick intersections of quartz veining along interpreted sheared contacts, which were often spatially associated with host-rock alteration and sulphide mineralisation.”

The maiden campaign

Westar embarked on the maiden 2,980-metre RC campaign following a detailed target program that pinpointed a suite of high-priority targets.

The mineral exploration company analysed several datasets to identify the drill hole locations, including:

  • A Westar flown electromagnetic and radiometric survey;
  • Gold in soil geochemistry within a broad mineralisation corridor identified from geochemical auger sampling;
  • Lithostructural interpretation in association with specialist consultants PGN Geoscience;
  • Ground-based field observations and geological mapping; and
  • Known prospector activity in the region.

Specifically, the ASX-lister encountered multiple shear zones, with thick quartz veining in altered basalts.

Westar also uncovered multiple intersections of disseminated and blebby sulphide mineralisation.

In addition, several drill targets were tested in an interpreted sequence of sheared, faulted and folded greenstone terrain and in several prospective locations along granite-greenstone contacts.

Now the explorer must wait for the technical results from its maiden RC campaign, with all samples with a commercial lab in Perth for further analysis.

Winjangoo Gold Project

Westar’s 100%-owned Winjangoo asset sits 25 kilometres to the north of Mount Magnet in Western Australia.

The gold property is one of two Mount Magnet projects on granted exploration licences, the other being the Coolaloo Project.

Both assets are in the Murchison Mineral Field near the historical mining centre of Mount Magnet, which has historically produced over six million ounces of gold since its initial discovery in 1891.

Overall, the Mount Magnet projects cover around 224 square kilometres.

So far at Winjangoo, Westar has conducted:

  • Regional reconnaissance and field mapping;
  • Airborne geophysical survey (both magnetic and radiometric);
  • An auger soil geochemical program comprising 749 samples;
  • Target generation, ranking and prioritisation; and
  • Heritage surveys prior to the clearing of drill lines and pads.
