Defence specialist Cobham (LSE: COB) said its Sensor System's business has been awarded a US$11.5 million development contract by the US Navy under which it will replace and update radar suppressing technologies.

The Band 5/6 TWT Replacement Module Assembly (TRMA) contract’s primary objective is to replace the existing radio frequency based TWT chain in the ALQ-99 Band 5/6 transmitter, with a solid state amplifier module and DC-DC converter.

"The TRMA program replaces older technology with new for enhanced reliability and ease of maintenance. This award demonstrates the strength of Cobham's continuing relationship with the Navy”, Cobham Sensor Systems president, Steve Schaefer said, "The ALQ-99 is a vital part of the suite carried by US Navy EA-6B Prowler and EA-18G Growler aircraft to jam and suppress hostile radars and radar guided weapons."

Cobham will begin the initial, risk reduction phase of the contract which is intended to demonstrate Cobham’s technical approach to the programme and also provide a feasible and cost effective solution. Subsequently the Navy may award follow-on options for preliminary design, detailed design, production and First Article Test of Engineering Development Model (EDM) units. The total $11.5 million contract value assumes the completion of all contact options.
