Maximus Resources begins ground geophysics at Hilditch targeting nickel sulphides

The FLEM geophysics survey aims to define prospective zones for nickel sulphide mineralisation before drill testing.

Maximus Resources Limited (ASX:MXR) (FRA:M5F) has started a 2.5 square kilometre high-powered fixed loop electromagnetic (FLEM) geophysics survey at the high-priority Hilditch nickel target, which is around 25 kilometres from BHP’s Kambalda Nickel Concentrator in WA.

This geophysics survey aims to define prospective zones for nickel sulphide mineralisation prior to drill testing.

The FLEM survey will cover outcropping nickel-bearing gossan and several promising shallow legacy nickel/copper drill intersections that include:

  • 2 metres at 2.4% nickel, 0.5% copper from 73 metres;
  • 4 metres at 1.8% nickel, 0.5% copper from 25 metres; and
  • 20 metres at 0.8% nickel including 9 metres at 1 % nickel from 14 metres.

Hilditch nickel target

The Hilditch nickel target, around 9 kilometres north of the company’s Wattle Dam Gold Mine, is defined by 300-metre-long outcropping and sub-cropping, nickel-rich gossans.

A geological review of the Hilditch target highlights prospective structural and stratigraphic positions that require comprehensive geophysical assessment.

With advancements of ground-based geophysics and modelling techniques, the application of modern high-powered electromagnetic survey is warranted.

The FLEM survey will involve nine 1.9-kilometre lines spaced 100 metres apart and is designed to evaluate the geology to 500 metres depth.

This will also incorporate the recently drilled Hilditch West target, where assays from recently completed drilling are expected to be received by mid-July 2021.

Survey to be completed in seven days

The FLEM survey is expected to be completed within seven days with interpretations to be received in the following two weeks.

Ground-based electromagnetic geophysics is an extremely useful tool in the exploration for nickel sulphide mineralisation due to the conductive response of sulphide minerals.

Massive and semi-massive nickel mineralisation exhibit strong conductive signatures in contrast to surrounding geology.

Due to the high levels of exploration activity within Western Australia and demand for geophysical service providers there has been a delay in the planned geophysical program in the Spargoville Belt.

The company expects electromagnetic surveys across its central target to be completed in the coming months with the improved availability of the specialised SQUID equipment.
