"Build your own Facebook" web technology firm Tribe raises US$7.5mln in funding round

Tribe tries to make building community sites idiot-proof but it can make no guarantees about the idiocy or otherwise of those who end up using the sites

Tribe, a tech firm that enables businesses to create customer communities, has received US$7.5mln of backing in a seed funding round.

The Canadian company claimed that demand for its community platform has exploded as businesses from the Software as a Service (SaaS) and technology sectors adopt a community-based engagement approach for their customers.

Customer numbers at Tribe have soared 400% year-on-year since 2019, the company revealed in a press release.

“Tribe is building a flexible and highly customizable platform for communities, making it one-click easy for individuals and enterprises to spin up community sites for their fans and customers,” said Ethan Kurzweil, a partner at Bessemer Venture Partners, an early-stage venture capital firm that has jointly led the investment round with sector peer CRV.

Co-founder and chief executive officer, Siavash Mahmoudian, said Tribe believes any business should be able to build something similar to Facebook, LinkedIn, or Clubhouse for their brand in a few clicks.

“At Tribe, we don’t just want to solve technical problems. We want businesses to learn best practices by action. A community manager with no coding knowledge should be able to bring up their community with Tribe in hours and not months,” Mahmoudian said.
