A new service has been launched by low-carbon commodity broker SCB Group to help individuals offset their car’s CO2 emissions, called ClimatePositive.
ClimatePositive customers, who will receive a car-window badge showing their environmental credentials, will offset 25% more greenhouse gas emissions per car than the highest of 800 most popular cars surveyed by Which?, SCB said.
To determine how much CO2 emissions needed to be abated, ClimatePositive said it analyzed these 800 different car models, their emissions and the average annual mileage by drivers in the US and Europe. “We then add 25% to ensure we are ClimatePositive.”
Having abated more than 360mln metric tonnes of CO2 across its global transactions, with this service the low-carbon commodity broker said its target is now to abate 1bn tonnes of CO2 by 2030.
As part of a new partnership, SCB said its revenue from ClimatePositive will go to charity buildOn to help enable solar and adult learning projects in Malawi.
SCB said the partnership with buildOn in Malawi is linked to 13 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, bringing solar-powered technology to schools and helping enable adult literacy programs.
These education programs will empower work through activities, including reforestation, irrigation, crop and livestock management and beekeeping, SCB said.
“Our mission is to promote a low-carbon future,” said Kevin McGeeney, chief executive of SCB. “With the launch of ClimatePositive, individuals can join us on this mission and target one billion MT of CO2 reduced by 2030.”
He added: “Having been on two SCB-buildOn treks, one in Haiti and the second in Senegal, I am delighted with our buildOn partnership. Being able to fund solar power for schools in Malawi by driving ClimatePositive brings me tremendous joy, and I proudly display a ClimatePositive badge in my car window.”
BuildOn's Djibril Ouattara said the partnership with SCB is “a huge opportunity to empower community members in buildOn’s partner villages in rural areas in Malawi through the Adult Literacy program within classrooms lit-up with solar energy”.
Ouattara said the adult literacy program would particularly benefit women as they make up more than 70% of the program’s participants.
