Vuzix says Smart Glasses adopted by food processing company TOMRA to improve worker safety, efficiency

Vuzix glasses are compatible with TOMRA Visual Assist, an AR app that enables remote experts to provide support to a customer or an on-site field service engineer

Vuzix Corporation (NASDAQ:VUZI) (FRA:V7XN) announced Tuesday that its Smart Glasses have found another use in food processing, after being adopted by the beverage container collection and food sorting company TOMRA.

Vuzix glasses are compatible with TOMRA Visual Assist, an augmented reality (AR) application that enables TOMRA's remote experts to provide support to a customer or an on-site field service engineer to help optimize food processing equipment performance, reduce costs and improve worker safety, all hands-free.

The TOMRA program delivers remote training and shares specialist knowledge of highly complex products, allowing organizations to operate more efficiently while also cutting down on the need to travel — saving money and keeping employees more protected from COVID-19.

Andreas Reddeman, VP and head of global service at TOMRA Food, aftermarket & service, wrote on the company’s corporate blog that TOMRA Virtual Assist allows for increased knowledge sharing, as if experienced engineers traveled to every food processing site.

"TOMRA Visual Assist enables a greater level of clarity in the communication and information transfer between the person on site and the expert providing guidance remotely. It acts as the local eyes of the remote TOMRA expert,” Reddeman wrote. “... If a repair requires replacing a part, TOMRA's expert can easily identify it and ensure the right spare is sent, increasing the first-time fix rate. With TOMRA Visual Assist, our most skilled and experienced staff can spread their knowledge more broadly than they ever could if they had to travel to every site."

Smart glasses also literally give workers using the program, a hands-free solution, which improves safety by virtue of eliminating the need to look down at a tablet or phone for information.

"Vuzix Smart Glasses continue to be deployed in an ever-widening number of use cases and industries around the world as more and more companies realize that sending a pair of our glasses can be more effective than sending a person,” Vuzix CEO Paul Travers said in a statement. “Deploying Vuzix Smart Glasses in enterprise is usually a safer, cheaper, faster and, in many aspects, just a better way of doing business.”
