Netflix and chips (of the Intel variety)

Fourth-quarter 2020 results begin to flow this week in the US, with Netflix and Intel in focus.

The week ahead

In the UK, we expect a continuation of the flow off January trading updates including Computacenter PLC (LON: CCC) on Friday.

Computacenter trades near record highs after releasing a string of positive trading news through the pandemic as customers accelerated their investment in their working from home infrastructure. The last outlook upgrade came early last month when the company said that its adjusted profit before tax for 2020 is unlikely to be less than £190mln. In September, Computacenter announced the acquisition of North American information technology solutions provider Pivot Technology Solutions for around C$106mln in cash.

Across the pond, the Martin Luther King Jr Day holiday today and the Presidential inauguration is on Wednesday. Netflix is scheduled to release fourth-quarter (Q4) results on Tuesday while IBM and Intel are scheduled to release Q4 results on Thursday. Citrix Systems and Teradyne results could also appear.

Intel has lagged the semiconductor space as AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) and NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) have taken market share and the company last week announced the appointment of a new chief executive officer in Pat Gelsinger who takes control in February. The company has suffered from manufacturing issues over the last year.

Netflix, the consumer video streaming business, trades near record highs, having benefited from the working from home environment, but faces increased competition from the likes of Amazon, Apple and Disney.
