Vodafone faces challenge to US$2bn India tax settlement

An international arbitration tribunal in The Hague ruled in Vodafone's favour n September

Vodafone Group PLC (LON:VOD) has said India is to challenge a US$2bn tax rebate awarded to it by an independent tribunal in the Netherlands.

An unnamed senior government official said India would challenge the ruling in Singapore, according to Reuters.

Vodafone was awarded the payment in September when an international arbitration tribunal in The Hague ruled that India’s tax breached an investment treaty agreement between India and the Netherlands.

Earlier this week, India lost another high-profile tax case when the tribunal awarded Cairn Energy US$1.2bn in damages and costs for a capital gains dispute dating back to 2015.

This award is also expected to be appealed given its size, the government official told Reuters.
