Hornby looks forward to Christmas after swinging to small interim profit

The firm said there is “a real energy” for the festive season

Hornby PLC (LON:HRN) said sales continue to be ahead of last year as it looks forward to the key Christmas season after swinging to a small interim profit.

The model train maker and owner of the Airfix, Meccano and Scalextric brands said there is “a real energy” within the company for the festive season although it did not provide guidance due to COVID-19 uncertainty.

In the six months to September 30, revenue climbed 33% to £21mln, while last year’s £2.5mln loss before tax turned into a £17,000 profit.

The period ended with £4mln net cash as opposed to last year’s £8.4mln net debt.

The 100-year-old company benefited from people staying at home, the turnaround plan and the launch of new products and technology, such as Bluetooth circuit and accessory controllers.

Shares advanced 7% to 36.3p early on Thursday.
