WM Morrison Supermarkets PLC - Morrisons, Waitrose remove glitter from Christmas products

WM Morrison Supermarkets PLC (LON:MRW), Waitrose and John Lewis have announced they will remove glitter from Christmas products to cut microplastic pollution.

Glitter is made from tiny particles of plastic and is difficult to recycle or be disposed of properly, so it often ends up dispersed on land, rivers and oceans.

Morrisons said its Christmas crackers will be completely plastic-free, it reduced the amount of plastic packaging on cards and decorations and will also introduce ‘no plastic’ felt, hessian and wooden Christmas decorations, removing 50 tonnes of plastic from its shelves during the festive period.

The initiative is being extended to non-seasonal lines as well.

Waitrose and John Lewis also said they will ditch glitter from own-brand cards, crackers, wrapping paper and gift bags and is targeting to make its own packaging more eco-friendly by 2023.

Sainsbury’s has also launched a similar initiative, Asda unveiled last month a sustainable Christmas range while Tesco only uses edible glitter.

Shares in Morrisons shed 2% to 171.1p on Thursday afternoon.
