Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) announced it is creating 10,000 new permanent roles in the UK in 2020, taking the company’s total permanent UK workforce to over 40,000.
They will be across sites such as corporate offices and two new fulfilment centres launching in the autumn in the North East and in the Midlands.
The new roles, including engineers, graduates, HR and IT professionals, health and safety and finance specialists, as well as the teams who will pick, pack and ship customer orders.
Of the total, 3,000 have already been filled in the previous months while 7,000 are still vacant.
The delivery giant is also seeking for over 20,000 seasonal workers ahead of the festive period at its sites across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and at three pop-up fulfilment centres.
‘’This huge expansion announced in the UK by Amazon comes as little surprise, given the massive surge in sales the tech giant has experienced, as the e-commerce sector boomed during the pandemic,” said Susannah Streeter, analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown.
“With expansion planned right across the UK, high street retailers are going to have to deliver some dramatic changes if they’re to compete with the king of e-commerce.”
