AstraZeneca says chronic kidney disease drug passes final stage trial with flying colours

Farxiga was reported to show “a statistically significant and clinically meaningful effect” to prevent renal function from worsening or risk of death

AstraZeneca PLC (LON:AZN) announced its candidate for chronic kidney disease (CKD) has passed the final stage of clinical trials with flying colours.

Farxiga was reported to show “a statistically significant and clinically meaningful effect” to prevent renal function from worsening or risk of death.

The FTSE 100-listed pharma company added it is “the first medicine to significantly reduce the risk of death from any cause” in CKD patients with and without type-2 diabetes.

The trial was stopped in March, earlier than initially scheduled, as advised by an independent committee due to “overwhelming efficacy”.

Analysts at Shore Capital previously forecast sales of US$3bn by 2024.

The drug was approved in the US for heart failure in May.

Shares were flat at 8,679p on Tuesday morning.
