Hipgnosis Songs Fund Ltd (LON:SONG) has acquired the music catalogue of the songwriter behind Lady Gaga’s 'Poker Face’ and ‘Alejandro’ and platinum-selling singles for Nicki Minaj, Enrique Iglesias and Jennifer Lopez.
Producer and songwriter RedOne, the stage name of Moroccan-Swedish singer Nadir Khayat, has sold Hipgnosis 100% of the rights to his songs and copyright, writer royalties and producer royalties to his 337-song catalogue.
Lady Gaga’s songs with RedOne have been streamed more than 5bn times, she has 52mln monthly listeners on Spotify and was the most streamed artist in the world last month, Hipgnosis noted.
Merck Mercuriadis, founder of The Family (Music) Limited and Hipgnosis Songs Fund Limited, said: “Lady Gaga and RedOne represent one of the greatest producer/artist songwriting relationships of all time.
“They single-handedly put electronic dance music on the radio and changed the sound of pop music for more than a decade,” he said, saying the songs “are amongst the most important of the millennium”.
‘Poker Face’ sold over 14mln copies, making it the biggest-selling single worldwide of 2009 as well as reaching Number 1 in 20 countries, while Bad Romance sold more than 12mln and reached Number 1 in 36 global charts and ‘Just Dance’ sold over 10mln and reached Number 1 in the US and UK singles charts, while ‘Alejandro’, ‘LoveGame’ and ‘Judas’ were all multi-platinum-selling singles.
Other platinum sellers penned by RedOne include Minaj’s ‘Starships’ and ‘Pound the Alarm’, Iglesias and Pitbull’s ‘I Like It’, J-Lo’s ‘On the Floor’ and ‘Dance Again’, Sean Kingston’s ‘Fire Burning’ and Alexandra Burke’s UK Number 1 single ‘Start Without You’.
Shares in the fund were down 2% to 118p on Thursday morning.
