B&M ups dividend as strong trading continues through coronavirus lockdown

Sales have boomed but social distancing measures have increased operating costs

B&M European Value Retail SA (LON:BME) upped its final dividend as it reported unusually strong trading had continued during the coronavirus pandemic.

The convenience retailer kept operating some stores during the lockdown, experiencing high demand for gardening and DIY products as people stuck at home found things to do.

Social distancing measures have increased operating costs, it said, adding it is unclear how trading will pan out for the rest of the year.

The final dividend was raised to 5.4p per share, from 4.9p last year, bringing the full-year payout up 6.6% to 8.1p.

In the year to March 28, revenue jumped 16% to £3.8bn with profit before tax up 3% to £252mln.

Shares dropped 6% to 356.76p on Thursday morning.
