WH Ireland and Cantor call off talks

Talks began last month but have now ended on a formal basis.

Stockbroker merger talks between WH Ireland Group PLC (LON:WHI) and Cantor Fitzerald have ended.

WH Ireland last month confirmed it was in talks to acquire Cantor Europe’s mid-cap and alternate investment market corporate finance business.

Today, the company announced that the two parties have agreed not to pursue discussions further.

Comments from WH Ireland chief executive Philip Wale, however, pointed to some continuation between the firms.

"We would like to thank the Cantor team for working with us on this potential transaction, and whilst we are not progressing on a formal basis, we acknowledge the positive relationships we have built with both the team and the corporate clients and we hope to further develop these going forward,” Wale said in a statement.

“Our corporate & institutional broking division continues to make good progress in winning new corporate clients, as demonstrated by a number of new high profile appointments in recent weeks, and the WH Ireland Board remains alive to any further potential opportunities that may be presented such as this to supplement the group's organic growth strategy."
