Cairn Energy’s Mexican exploration well is a ‘duster’

The Ehecatl-1 was drilled down to 4,451 metres but found no hydrocarbons in its target.

Cairn Energy PLC (LON:CNE) has announced that the ENI operated Ehecatl-1 exploration well, offshore Mexico, was unsuccessful.

The well had aimed to prove hydrocarbons in a Lower Miocene target but Cairn said it did not encounter any reservoired hydrocarbons.

Analysis of the well data will now be used to update the explorer’s understanding of the block and will inform a decision on a second well.

It has now been permanently plugged and abandoned.

Ehecatl-1 was drilled some 65 kilometres offshore, using the Valaris 8505 semi-submersible rig. It was in a water depth of 426 metres and was drilled down to 4,451 metres.
