Morning Report: FTSE 100 boosted as Gilead coronavirus drug shows promising signs

The FTSE 100 is set for a flyer this morning on a report of a good performance by US drugs giant Gilead Sciences’s treatment for coronavirus. The index is set to rise up to 200 points to more than 5,800.

China’s powerhouse economy, however, has shrunk for the first time in decades due to the impact of coronavirus. Official data showed a 6.8% decline in the latest quarter.

Gambling group Flutter (LON:FLTR) says since the suspension of UK and Irish racing due to coronavirus its revenue has declined by 32% year-on-year. This was less than expected as racing has carried on in Australia and the US.

Harry Potter publisher Bloomsbury (LON:BMY) has become the latest mid-cap to raise money from shareholders with plans for an £8.4mln placing. Estate agent Foxton’s, bowling alley operator Hollywood Bowl and Gym Group are also raising money.

Gfinity (LON:GFIN) has been chosen by cricket broadcaster Willow TV to design and deliver "The eCricket Challenge", in partnership with Betway. "The eCricket Challenge" is a TV series that will see cricketers compete against each other in the video game Cricket 19.

ANGLE's (LON:AGL) Parsortix system has received an endorsement from the University of Athens for new research undertaken in head and neck cancer. The liquid biopsy was superior to a leading antibody approach when it came to harvesting circulating tumour cells.
