Rainbow Rare Earths says coronavirus impact limited at the present time, transformation continues

Rainbow's Gakara project is one of the highest grade rare earths projects in the world

Rainbow Rare Earths Ltd (LON:RBW) has said in commentary accompanying results for the six months to 31 December that the coronavirus is thus far having a limited impact on its operations in Burundi, but that the situation is being monitored closely.

During the six months in question the company revised its development strategy significantly, and is now planning a much larger operation based on a production rate of at least 20,000 tonnes of concentrate per year.

New chief executive George Bennett has also lent the company US$1mln to tide it over, while current operations are revised and optimised to achieve breakeven.

During the six months to December the company produced a modest 100 tonnes of concentrate, which was exported and sold.

The loss for the period amounted to US$2.3mln.
