Ethernity Networks Ltd (LON:ENET) is working with a partner to offer a new open-source concept that will help mobile service providers and their suppliers provide “extremely high bandwidth and low latency” on their new 5G networks.
Ethernity, which specialises in FPGA technology that helps to reduce pressure on computer processors and networks by offloading some computer functions away from the CPU, has teamed up with Helsinki-listed TietoEVRY.
The Finnish company has developed user plane functionality (UPF) software components for packet processing and control that make use of the virtual packet processing (VPP) open source project to enable high flexibility in 5G networking.
By offloading the data plane to Ethernity's FPGA-based ACE-NIC100 SmartNIC hardware, the new open source product offers the high bandwidth and low latency while saving CPU cores.
The two companies will jointly promote these accelerated UPF technologies to manufacturers and system integrators as well as through the pair's technology partners and customers.
David Levi, Ethernity’s chief executive officer, said: “As communications service providers continue to race toward initial 5G rollouts, they are recognizing that they cannot achieve the required benchmarks to enable true 5G performance without significant data plane acceleration.
“Offloading data processing and resource-consuming virtual functions to an FPGA-based SmartNIC is the most efficient means of achieving such acceleration and eliminates heavy loads on the CPU. It frees those resources for user sessions that require deterministic results for high throughput and low latency.”
