Pressure BioSciences (OTCQB:PBIO) said a keynote speech, to be delivered by microbiologist and infectious diseases expert Dr. Bradford Powell at  the Clinical Microbiology & Microbial Genomics Conference, could help to increase visibility of its pressure cycling technology (PCT) platform.

Shares of the company rallied on the news, up 4.17 per cent as at about 1 p.m. EDT, trading at 25 cents.

Powell is scheduled to present the keynote address during the opening ceremony of ClinMicro-2012 in San Antonio, Texas from November 12 to 14.

In the keynote address and a second, main session presentation later in the conference, the company said Powell is expected to present data highlighting the advantages of its PCT platform that has been shown to enable “significant improvements” in molecular-based microbiological testing - a “rapidly growing and extremely important” area in laboratory medicine today.

“We believe that the growing number of PCT applications in basic and applied research, as shown by the work of Dr. Powell and dozens of other researchers over the past several years, promises to expand the understanding of important microorganisms in clinical medicine, anti-bioterror measures, the forensic sciences, and in food safety – as well as in other areas of the life sciences,” said VP of sales and marketing Dr. Nate Lawrence.

“We also believe that these clear sample-processing advantages will continue to compel researchers to integrate the PCT Platform into their basic scientific studies and clinical applications, resulting in measurable revenue growth and product visibility for PBI.”

Pressure BioSciences’ PCT platform uses rapid and repeating cycles of hydrostatic pressure at controlled temperatures to extract cell components in the preparation of a biological sample, such as DNA and proteins from humans, animals and plants, for further study.

Its PCT products can be used for mass spectrometry, biomarker discovery, bio-therapeutics, vaccine development, forensics, and counter-bioterror applications, among other applications.

The company notes that samples containing infectious microorganisms are often problematic for today’s molecular-based, diagnostic laboratory test methods.

Highly effective and dependable procedures are required to maintain absolute safety during sample preparation and analysis, it said, yet to also preserve sample molecular integrity.

Powell, president of Cernomics Solutions, said: “It has already been demonstrated that the PCT Platform has the ability to inactivate and extract live attenuated virus and bacteria that are used as models of important biological threat agents."

He added that in some cases, the process could be completed in less than an hour, as safely and as effectively as conventional procedures.

“Consequently, we are confident that the PCT Platform has the potential to provide an adaptable, cost-effective solution for advancing the capability, safety, and performance of assays used in the clinical and microbial genomics sciences.

“This is a transformative technology whose time, we believe, has come for broad application and acceptance.”

Earlier this month, Pressure BioSciences said that two research groups have reported on the ability of its PCT platform to improve the detection of DNA in so-called "challenged" forensic samples.

The studies were presented by scientists from the Institute of Applied Genetics, University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth Texas, and from the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences in Houston Texas.

In August, the company said revenues from the sale of PCT products and services was $224,384 for the second quarter, up 18 per cent from a year ago.
