Vodafone offers AWS 'edge computing' to business customers

Edge computing is said to increase privacy and speeds over the cloud

Vodafone Group plc (LON:VOD) has teamed up with Amazon Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) to offer ‘edge computing’ capabilities for its business customers in Europe.

Edge computing is where devices, which are running software on the cloud, take on key parts of the computing and processing in order to increase privacy and reduce latency, ie the time it takes for data to be sent from one point to another.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) will provide its AWS Wavelength service, which Vodafone said will offer ultra-low latency for business customers that need it for applications from artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality to video analytics, autonomous vehicles, robotics and drone control.

With edge computing capabilities developers can build applications on the AWS platform that serve end users with single-digit millisecond latencies over the 5G network.

“Faster speeds and lower latencies have the potential to revolutionize how our customers do business, and they can rely on Vodafone's existing capabilities and security layers within our own network,” said Vinod Kumar, chief executive of Vodafone Business.

AWS Wavelength will be available first to business customers in the UK and Germany on the Vodafone 5G network, expanding to other markets across Europe.
