AFC Energy PLC (LON:AFC) has said its HydroX-Cell(S) fuel cell can “compete favourably” with alternate proton exchange membrane (PEM) technologies in the market.
The AIM-listed firm, which specialises in hydrogen power generation, said one advantage of HydroX-Cell(S) is that it is capable of accepting low grade, low cost hydrogen to generate power, unlike PEM, which requires high cost, high grade hydrogen.

AFC added that a single fuel cell using its technology generated power “comparable to or better than” market leading PEM technology, while its AlkaMem membrane technology used in the HydroX-Cell(S) cells offered cost benefits compared to what it said were “high cost fuel membranes” developed for PEM in addition to cost savings from cheaper fuel.
The company is now working on a pre-commercial prototype of a HydroX-Cell(S) module for demonstration in 2020 to potential commercial partners.

“Delivery of a high performing alkaline membrane-based fuel cell has been described by many leaders in the field as the "Holy Grail" of fuel cell technologies and we are very pleased to be at the forefront of this emerging disruptive technology”, he added.
In afternoon trading on Thursday, AFC’s shares were 6.6% higher at 6.50p.
