Futura Medical PLC (LON:FUM) has presented new information it said adds to the growing body of safety and efficacy data supporting a gel it is developing for erectile dysfunction.
MED2005, which is currently undergoing a phase III clinical trial, demonstrated a “dose-proportional” increases in penile blood flow, according to the abstracts presented to an industry conference that took place in Nashville.
Published for the Sexual Medicine Society of North America gathering, the data also revealed the gel had a “good safety profile” for the female partners of the men using it.
"The data presented add to the growing body of data supporting the clinical and commercial potential of MED2005," said James Barder, Futura’s chief executive.
"In previous studies MED2005 has been shown to significantly improve orgasmic function, intercourse satisfaction and overall satisfaction. The latest data provide evidence that these benefits may be achieved with a good partner safety profile,” he added.
MED2005 uses the Dermasys technology to deliver a fast-acting drug through the skin. The innovation is also being developed in pain medication.
Futura’s erectile dysfunction (ED) treatment has a number of advantages over the blue pills currently prescribed for the condition.
Its rapid onset is a big plus, while MED2005 has been developed to avoid the side-effects of the current crop of medications that mean around half those taking tablets such as Viagra or Cialis stop within a year.
“We believe that MED2005's fast-acting, topical formulation combined with the growing body of clinical evidence demonstrating efficacy and safety, make this innovative ED therapy an ideal alternative product,” said CEO Barder.
“Additionally, these data further validate the broad potential of our DermaSys advanced transdermal delivery system to enable novel treatment approaches that have improved safety and efficacy profiles compared with other modes of delivery," he concluded.
