S&P/ASX 200 closes in the green following a positive lead from Wall Street

1.5 billion shares worth $3 billion changed hands today with 636 stocks closing higher, 409 lower and 373 unchanged.

S&P/ASX 200 (INDEXASX:XJO) managed to improve by 46.5 points or 0.71% to close at 6563.6 following a positive lead from Wall Street over the weekend.

The US jobs data was slightly weaker than anticipated but not bad enough to stoke concerns over the health of the economy.

With the release of several pieces of economic data last week, the market is now raising expectations for the US Fed to cut interest rates.

Tech sector gains most

Trading volume were also lighter than average today with public holidays for several states including NSW, Queensland, ACT and South Australia.

The tech sector enjoyed the largest percentage gain with market darlings Afterpay Touch (ASX:APT) and Wisetech Global (WTC) climbing 2.2% and 4% per cent respectively.

The best performing stock among the top 200 companies was investment house Washington H. Soul Pattinson (ASX:SOL), which advanced 7.25%.

Gold miner St Barbara (ASX:SBM) and nickel miner Western Areas (ASX:WSA) rose 3.2% and 1.95%.
