The Nikkei 225 dropped 75 points, or around half a percent to 14,742, as an inflation report also spooked traders. The Shanghai Composite added three to be at 2,160.
In the US, the Dow closed up 0.36%, or 55 points at 15,328 and FTSE 100 is expected on Friday to open around 1.8 points higher after closing yesterdayt at 6,566.
