Gemstone producer Richland Resources (LON:RLD) has announced that one of its employees was shot dead by illegal miners in Tanzania on July 21.
Willy Onesmo Mushi, who worked for Richland’s subsidiary TanzaniteOne Mining, was killed during a government operation to oust illegal miners who have occupied parts of the licence.
Richland chairman Ed Nealon said: “On behalf of the company I would like to convey our sincerest condolences to Mr Mushi's family for their tragic loss.
“We now await further updates on the police investigation into Mr Mushi's killing and we welcome the Government’s action against the illegal and violent mining activities.”
The ‘Field Force’ police initiative to eject the illegal miners continues with the full backing of the Tanzanian government, Richland added.
Part of Level 18 of the mine was reclaimed by the company following the police’s intervention. Mushi was killed three days later on level 23.
Richland has experienced more than 12 months of “uncontrolled illegal mining and violence” directed at its workers, especially within high grade and quality areas.
The struggle has severely affected operations, which have been curtailed due to fears over safety.
Richland shares fell 0.5p or 16% to 2.5p each.
