Richland Resources to receive US$1.44mln in insurance payout

Richland Resources (LON:RLD) says its insurance claim over the break-in at its tanzanite mining operation in Tanzania last year has been settled.

The underwriters have approved US$1.44mln, the company said, adding it expected to receive the funds before the end of this month.

As reported in December last year, around 89,066 grams of material with a total value of around US$1.46million was stolen; around 6,955 grams were subsequently recovered by the country's police force

The company's chief executive Bernard Olivier said: "We are pleased to announce the successful settlement of the insurance claim and would also like to thank the Tanzania police force for all their assistance."

Today's news comes in the same week the firm revealed production numbers for its latest quarter.

Tanzanite output totalled 795,000 carats in the three months to December, up from 554,000 a year earlier and 699,000 in the previous three months.

Average grades were 102 carats per tonne compared to 58 carats in the comparable period a year ago.

Sales in the period were US$3.9mln and would have been higher but for the break-in, which saw US$1.46mln worth of stones, or 89,066 grams, stolen.

Shares rose 12.5%.
