Spreadex analyst mulls "truly post-Brexit" UK jobs data

Financial analyst at Spreadex,  Connor Campbell walks us through Wednesday's UK  jobs stats for July, which took some by surprise with the change in the number of those claiming for unemployment benefits
Analysts had been expecting an increase of 5,200 people, but instead, there was a drop in the number of claimants of 8,600 - going against the expected slow-down in the jobs market.
The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.9%.
It's very early days, says Campbell, but significantly, this is the first piece of "truly post-Brexit" data, as it covers the whole of the July month (the vote was on June 23).
"We are still very much at the beginning of the journey, not the end," says Campbell, who adds there are many significant events to come, not least the actual exit from the EU.
