In The News - West Cumbria Mining

FROM THE BROKING DESK
For West Cumbria Mining***, last night’s ‘historic’ Conservative Party by-election victory in Copeland was not really that significant. While it may seem like good news for the company’s Whitehaven Coking Coal Project, both the Conservative candidate Trudy Harrison and the Labour candidate Gillian Troughton were already very supportive of the plan, and WCM had a good relationship with the previous Labour MP for Copeland, Jamie Reed.
This simply reflects local support for the prospective mine — it is extremely strong. Whitehaven was built in the mid-19th Century as an export terminal for coal to Ireland and the area has a rich and long coal mining history, so locals are enthusiastic about the industry returning and providing jobs in the area. Where support should be in question is for Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn; sadly, he’s going to be a lot more difficult to ditch than Claudio Ranieri.
