Oracle Coalfields (LON:ORCP) has hired experience power generation engineer Thomas Hawkins as a project co-ordinator.

The AIM-listed company is currently developing the 1.4 billion tonne Thar coalfield project in Pakistan. At the moment it is working through both a definitive feasibility study and the bankable feasibility study.

Crucially it has already signed a memorandum of understanding with Pakistani power firm Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) for the mine’s off-take.

Hawkins has also been appointed to a committee that has been set up by KESC.

Oracle said that Hawkins will liaise with KESC on a regular basis to ensure that objectives are achieved to ensure successful completion of Oracle's Thar project.

"We're delighted to welcome Tom to the team at Oracle Coalfields and I look forward to working with him on our Block VI Thar Coalfield project in the Sindh Province,” chief executive Shahrukh Khan said.

“His experience and expertise both in Pakistan and complex international power generation projects will bring significant value to the company."

Thar is located 380 kilometres east of Karachi in Sindh Province. Oracle plans to excavate lignite coal, which is brown in colour and has lower calorific value than the thermal coal that goes for export from places such as Indonesia.
