Capital & Regional PLC (LON:CAL) shares were in the red on Monday after a huge blaze tore through one of its shopping centres in East London.

The company said The Mall in Walthamstow has been evacuated as firefighters battle a fire that started early on Monday.

“Our immediate priority is site, customer and staff safety,” the group said in a statement.

“We will provide further information once the fire has been extinguished and we have fully assessed the situation.”

According to the London Fire Brigade, part of the roof of two-storey building was on fire.

Capital & Regional owns six other shopping centres in Ilford, Luton, Maidstone, Wood Green, Blackburn and Hemel Hempstead,.

Shares fell 8% to 15p around noon.
