Peel Mining appoints ex-Aurelia chief Jim Simpson as executive director, looks towards mine development

A maiden mineral resource estimate for Wagga Tank-Southern Nights is on track for delivery this month

Peel Mining Ltd (ASX:PEX) has appointed James (Jim) Simpson as executive director of mining, effective from September 1 this year.

The appointment of Simpson reflects Peel’s exploration success in the Cobar Basin, where it has begun to move away from exploration and look towards mine development.

Peel managing director Rob Tyson said he was delighted someone of Jim’s calibre had chosen to join the board of Peel.

“Jim brings with him a wealth of mining and corporate experience and has an intimate understanding of the Cobar region.

“I look forward to working with Jim as we progress our high-grade deposits towards development.”

Simpson is an experienced mining engineer, specialising in underground metalliferous mining, with substantial public company board and management experience across more than 30 years in the mining industry.

He holds a Bachelor of Engineering Mining with Honours from the University of NSW, a Diploma of Business (Frontline Management) and is a member of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

Simpson’s most recent role was chief executive officer and managing director at Aurelia Metals Ltd (ASX:AMI).

During his time at Aurelia, the company’s market capitalisation increased from below $20 million to over $800 million at its peak, while also repaying more than $125 million of debt and increasing its production profile by acquiring Peak Gold Mines.

His previous roles include chief operating officer & executive vice president for Peak Gold Ltd; general manager & director at Goldcorp Asia Pacific and general manager at MIM Holdings.

Simpson said it was an exciting time to be joining the Peel team as they progress from advanced exploration towards mine development.

He added: “I have a long and close association with the prolific Cobar region and am looking forward to helping the company further unlock the value they have defined in their high-grade discoveries.”

Peel recently raised $7 million to continue advancing its Wagga Tank-Southern Nights project and its 5%0-owned Mallee Bull deposits in the Cobar Basin.

The funding will be used towards mining scoping studies at Wagga Tank as well as pre-development activities at Mallee Bull.
