AMC stock propelled by Avengers: Endgame's record-setting opening weekend

The theater chain set single-day records in ticket and concession sales

AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc (NYSE:AMC) shares are popping as moviegoers rushed in record numbers to see Avengers: Endgame.

The world’s largest theater chain announced Monday that it set new single-day highs over the weekend attendance and concession sales. The culmination of the Avengers saga sold 2.6 million tickets Saturday, topping the previous high set during the opening weekend of fellow Marvel Studios flick Black Panther. Marvel is owned by media giant Walt Disney Co (NYSE:DIS).

The stock ascended nearly 3% to $15.83 before the bell Monday, but slowed to a slight rise of just a nickel per share to $15.45 in trading after the open.

The film was so popular that AMC actually set its concession record twice – first on Friday then again on Saturday. Food and beverage revenue hit $13 million on Friday, only to be outdone by $15 million a day later.

All told, AMC theaters showed Avengers:Endgame 63,000 times over the weekend, 16,000 more than the debut weekend of any other film.
