Papa John's Int'l Inc (NASDAQ: PZZA) is adding Shaquille O’Neal to its board of directors. The former NBA MVP will also be an investor in nine of the pizza chain’s Atlanta restaurants and serve as a brand ambassador. Earlier this month, the company announced that founder John Schnatter would leave the board after a series of scandals including the use of a racial slur.
The stock closed down 6.2% at $49.80.
Tiffany & Co (NYSE:TIF) made gains after the company beat on earnings while missing on sales. The luxury jeweler posted earnings of $1.67 per share on net sales of $1.32 billion, compared with expectations of $1.61 EPS on net sales of $1.34 billion. The New York-based company previously signaled a weak holiday season thanks to lower spending by Chinese tourists and softening demand. Same-store sales dropped 1% from the previous year.
After a dip before the bell, shares rallied 3.2% to finish at $103.21.
Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) took a hit Friday after reporting disappointing North America sales growth for the fiscal third quarter, according to CNBC. The comany posted adjusted earnings of $0.68 per share, compared with the consensus estimate of $0.65. Sales, meanwhile, matched estimates at $9.61 billion.
The stock lost traction, falling 6.6% to end the day at $82.19.
Goldcorp (NYSE:GG) edged down after it came to light late Friday that not everyone is happy with the $10 billion proposal from Newmont Mining Corp (NYSE:NEM) to acquire it. Paulson, an investment firm with a 14.2 million share stake In Newmont, wrote a letter to CEO Gary Goldberg outlining its objections. The letter argued that the premium is unjustified, and that the move would transfer the value of Newmont’s recently announced Nevada joint venture with Barrick Gold Corp (NYSE:GOLD) to Goldcorp shareholders.
The shares of Goldcorp got the shaft, losing 3.3% to $10.80.
