Ocado blames 'operational issues' as fire at Andover warehouse disrupts grocery deliveries

Firefighters are still battling the fire, which started early Tuesday

A fire broke out at robot-run warehouse owned by Ocado Group PLC (LON:OCDO) on Tuesday just as the online grocer unveiled a wider full-year loss.

The blaze started around 02.34am on the Walworth Industrial Estate at Andover, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

The fire service said the incident involved automated packaging machinery and firefighters are still battling the fire.

There were no injuries reported but the fire has disrupted online shopping deliveries.

Customers took to Twitter to complain about cancelled deliveries, which Ocado blamed on “some operational issues”.

Hello Tony! We are sorry to hear that your order has been cancelled today. We have experienced some operational issues, but we will be working hard to ensure your next order with us goes without incident. We hope you can stay strong with the diet! - Mitch

Very angry to receive a vague and impersonal email blaming ‘operational issues’ for cancelling today’s order from @Ocado. It’s incredibly inconvenient and shoving a voucher at me is derisory and in no way makes up for that. What’s going on?!

The warehouse processes about 65,000 orders per week.

The news comes the same day as Ocado reported a loss before tax of £44.4mln for 2018, compared to £9.8mln a year ago.
