Late Movers: Walt Disney rallies after reporting 1Q results that beat estimates

Also moving were Electronic Arts and General Motors, which reports Wednesday

Walt Disney Co (NYSE:DIS) climbed after reporting first-quarter results the beat estimates. The company posted earnings per share of $1.84 on revenue of $15.30 billion. The consensus of analysts was for earnings per share of $1.55 on revenue of $15.18 billion.

The stock rose 1.6% to $114.51 in after-hours trading.

Snap Inc (NYSE:SNAP) rallied on a smaller-than-estimated fourth-quarter loss and stabilized daily active users. For the three months ended December 31, the Snapchat company posted a net loss of $0.04 per share on revenue of $389.82 million. The average estimate of analysts was for a loss of $0.08 on revenue of 375.82 million.

Shares climbed 19% to $8.38 in extended trading.

Electronic Arts Inc (NASDAQ:EA) sank after CEO Andrew Wilson said in a statement that the Madden NFL videogame company “did not perform to our expectations.” For the third quarter ended December 31, it posted net bookings of $1.61 billion, compared with the $1.75 billion average estimate of analysts.

The stock decreased 12% to $81.22 after the closing bell.

Viacom Inc (NASDAQ:VIA) climbed after reporting first-quarter earnings per share of $1.12, which beat the $1.03 average estimate of analysts. It posted revenue of $3.09 billion, compared with the $3.12 billion consensus. CEO Bob Bakish reportedly said on a conference call that the Nickelodeon cable channel has inked a pact with Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX ) to produce Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films.

The company’s Class A shares were up 2.6% to $34.53.

Church & Dwight Co Inc (NYSE:CHD) was the biggest loser on the S&P 500 Index after the Arm & Hammer company reported fourth-quarter earnings per share of $0.57, compared with the $0.58 forecast by analysts. It posted revenue of $1.07 billion, matching the consensus.

Shares dropped 7.5% to $60.46.

Archer Daniels Midland Co (NYSE:ADM) fell after reporting fourth-quarter earnings per share of $0.88, compared with the average estimate of $0.93. Revenue came in at $15.95 billion, compared with the $16.81 billion consensus.

The stock was down 5.9% to $41.85.

General Motors Co (NYSE:GM) shares edged higher on layoffs that began before the release of quarterly results Wednesday. In all, about 4,000 positions in North American are being eliminated as part of a broader restructuring designed to save billions of dollars and help prepare for an expected slowdown of the US automotive market. Analysts expect GM to report adjusted earnings per share of $1.22 for the fourth quarter, down from $1.65 per share a year earlier. Sales are expected at $36.48 billion, down from $37.72 billion.

Shares rose 1% to $39.30.

Estee Lauder Companies Inc (NYSE:EL) was the best performer among S&P 500 Index companies after reporting a second-quarter earnings beat and raising its full-year outlook. The company posted adjusted earnings per share of $1.86, which was well above the analyst' consensus. For 2019, the company raised its adjusted earnings per share guidance to between $4.92 and $5 from $4.73 to $4.82 previously.

The stock climbed 11% to $152.02.

Gilead Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:GILD) lost ground a day after it posted a mixed earnings report. The biotech giant reported earnings per share of $1.44 on revenue of $5.8 billion, while analysts had estimated profit of $1.70 per share on revenue of $5.5 billion.

The stock shed 3.4% to $67.68.
