Sports Direct’s Ashley mulls Hamleys takeover bid

Hamleys owner C.banner paid around £100mln for the iconic toy retailer three years ago and is said to want about £90mln for the company

Sports Direct (LON:SPD) owner Mike Ashley is on the hunt for a Christmas bargain by mulling a bid to take over iconic British toy retailer, Hamleys.

According to Sky News, Hamleys’ owners, China-based C.banner International, has said a few retailers have expressed an interest in the business.

The report added that Ashley has told advisers to the toys group that they are considering bids for the business. Irish toys chain Smyths is also interested.

Ashley is unlikely to be a frontrunner to acquire Hamleys unless he could secure a deal at a knockdown price, the report added.
