Former Sainsbury's boss Justin King returns to M&S as a director to aid turnaround

Justin King led the development of the M&S Simply Food convenience format during his time as director of food at the retailer

Former J Sainsbury plc (LON:SBRY) boss Justin King is returning to Marks and Spencer Group Plc (LON:MKS) as a non-executive director to aid the retailer with its restructuring.

King was highly regarded as the chief executive of Sainsbury’s for 10 years until 2014, having boosted the performance of the supermarket under his turnaround plan.

Before joining Sainsbury’s, he was the director of food at M&S, leading the development of the Simply Food convenience format. He also helped with the revival of Asda where he held senior positions.

M&S said King will use his experience to assist the company with its transformation programme.

Chief executive Steve Rowe said: “As we navigate the challenges ahead it will be enormously helpful to have his experience, wisdom and insight on the board. Many colleagues remember his time at M&S and will warmly welcome him back."

King said: "Having worked there 15 years ago, M&S has a very special place in my affections. I look forward to joining the board and supporting Steve in the turnaround that he is leading."

As part of its restructuring, M&S has earmarked 100 stores for closure in a bid to cut costs after struggling to improve sales at its clothing and home division in a tough retail market.

In its most recent trading update, the company said UK like-for-like sales dropped 2.2% in the first half to September 29 with clothing and home sales down 1.1% and food sales down 2.9%.
