Lithium Australia cathode powder plant to produce samples for China battery makers

Wholly-owned subsidiary VSPC Ltd owns and operates the Brisbane facility.

Lithium Australia NL (ASX:LIT) has completed a number of production runs of its lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode powder pilot-plant based in Brisbane, Queensland.

Samples will now be produced for lithium-ion battery-cell makers in China over the coming fortnight.

With in-house testing having confirmed the high capacity LFP cathode material, Lithium Australia will seek confirmation of that performance from prospective customers.

The now commissioned facility was officially opened on 6 September by Ian Macfarlane, chief executive of the Queensland Resources Council.

Lithium Australia’s Adrian Griffin said: “We are convinced that VSPC’s elegant solution to increasing lithium-ion battery efficiency is the best available for the production of LFP cathode powders.

“The technology also has applications in catalyst and medical fields. Independent tests have already shown that VSPC cathode powders out-perform industry benchmarks – a compelling reason for cell makers to use VSPC material.”

Elsewhere, the company recently commenced stage II SiLeach® processing trials at a facility in Sydney, New South Wales.

The objective is to use the processing technology to convert mine waste into lithium-ion batteries, which would be a world first.
