Five Below reports blowout fiscal 2Q earnings and revenue, lifts guidance as shares hit record peak

Company saw strength for its products across the board

Five Below Inc (NASDAQ:FIVE) reported on Thursday fiscal second-quarter results that beat on both earnings per share and revenue as shares of the retailer jumped in extended trade.

Earnings per share came in at US$0.45, topping the consensus estimate of US$0.38 and sharply exceeding the year-ago figure of US$0.30. Sales hit US$347.7mln, compared with the consensus estimate of US$334.84mln and the year-ago level of US$283.32mln.

"We saw broad-based strength across our worlds as our high quality, trend right products at incredible values continued to resonate with customers," said Five Below president and chief executive Joel Anderson in a statement.

Five Below hit a record high during the session on Friday at US$136.12 and settled 13.31% higher at US$130.89.

The stock was the most heavily traded stock in the after-hours session on Thursday, rising 8.7% to US$125.56, after releasing its results.

Five Below also raised its full-year guidance, further bolstering the stock.

It now expects net sales of US$1.528bn-US$1.54bn, from US$1.50bn-US$1.52bn. It guided earnings per share to US$2.51 to US$2.57, from US$2.42-US$2.48.

The company opened 34 new stores and ended the quarter with 692 stores in 33 states. This represents an increase in stores of 18.5% from the end of the second quarter of fiscal 2017.

The Philadelphia-based company is known for selling US$5 headphones and fake slime targeted to teens.
