easyJet and IAG report passenger and load factor growth in August

easyjet reported that passenger numbers for the month were up 5.6% at around 8.7mln compared to August 2017, while its load factor inched up 0.1 percentage points to 96.4%

FTSE 100-budget airline easyjet PLC (LON:EZJ) and fellow blue-chip constituent, International Consolidated Airlines Group SA (LON:IAG), have both reported growth in passenger numbers and load factors for the month of August.

easyjet reported that passenger numbers for the month were up 5.6% at around 8.7mln compared to August 2017, while its load factor inched up 0.1 percentage points to 96.4%.

For the rolling 12 months to August, the airline saw passenger growth of 5.8% to 84.1mln compared to the same period a year ago, while load factor was up 1.2 percentage points to 93.6%.

Meanwhile, IAG, whose airlines include British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia, and Vueling, reported passenger number growth of 7.2% to 11.4mln compared to last August, with load factors rising 0.5 percentage points to 87%.

In its year to date figures, IAG reported passenger number growth of 7.8% to 75.6mln compared to the year-ago period, while load factors were up 1.3 percentage points to 83.8%.

The growth in passengers follows similar good news for fellow airlines Ryanair Holdings PLC (LON:RYA) and Wizz Air Holdings PLC (LON:WIZZ), who reported earlier in the week that passenger numbers during the month had risen 9% to 13.8mln and 20.4% to 3.4mln respectively.

In early morning trading Thursday, easyJet shares were down 0.3% at 1,490.5p, while IAG shares were down 0.5% at 690.6p.
